The weather
is still hot, we are still swimming in the pool and sweating up a storm at the
gym and at work, but technically, it is now Autumn. Before we know it, the sun
will start setting earlier, the mornings will become that touch darker, and the
temperature will very slowly start to drop.
A lot of
people have trouble drinking water when it is cooler or cold. And we use the term ‘cold’ loosely here in Western
Australia. Parts of our state are still very warm throughout autumn and
winter. Most of us tend to associate
being thirsty and dehydrated with hot and humid days and sweating, but are you
aware that we can still get dehydrated in cooler weather also? Autumn and
winter dehydration is a very real problem. Just because we cannot see or feel ourselves sweating does not mean that
are bodies are not losing water.
Dehydration
is either caused by not drinking enough fluids, or if we are losing more fluids
than we are taking in. This makes your
body unable to function at its best, and this only worsens the more dehydrated
you are. Most adults aim for approximately 2L of water per day, but the amount
of water you need daily will depend on your diet, climate, level of physical
exercise, whether you have a physical job, or if you have been unwell.
Regardless
of the outside temperature, your body loses moisture throughout the day through
perspiration, breathing and other normal bodily functions. But because people don’t usually associate
dehydration with cold weather, making sure they get enough water is usually not
on the top of their to do list. Dehydration can actually be a significant threat in the cooler months
simply due to lack of awareness. People tend to get less thirsty in cooler
weather, but being less thirsty does not mean you are better hydrated.
You know
when you are cold outside, and you can see your breath in front of you? That is
actually water leaving your body. The
heavier and faster you breath in the cold, the more water (or vapour) you will
lose with each breath.
Need help to
stay hydrated in the cooler months? Here are some of our top tips!
- Don’t rely on being thirsty before you have a drink of water.Decide how much water you want to drink each day, set a goal and slowly sip throughout the day.
- Always have water with you in a refillable water bottle. If this is something that you already do in the summer, carry the habit through into the cooler months to help smash your hydration goals.
- If you have difficulty drinking cold water, try including some herbal teas into your diet to help boost your fluid intake.
- Try and reduce your alcohol, coffee and caffeinated drink intake.Caffeine can promote dehydration in the body.
- Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after any physical activity.
- Make sure you have a diet that includes a variety of fruits and vegetables. Not only are these foods healthy for you, they are also packed full of water and help boost your hydration goals.
- If you are feeling unwell with a cold, or are unlucky enough to get the flu, make sure you drink extra water!Being unwell can dehydrate you must faster.
