How Do You Really Know if You Are Drinking Enough Water?

02 October 2019

There is so much advice out there about how much water we should be drinking. Some stick by the 2 litres per day rule, some say 8 glasses per day, and some say it depends on your body weight. Everyone is different. We all have different activity levels, live in different climates, and no two bodies have the same needs. So what is right for you? How do you really know if you are drinking enough water?

Here are some of tell tale signs:

Fatigue

Are you tired? Lacking energy and feeling a bit flat? Drinking enough water is integral to the essential function of blood circulating oxygen around the body. Lack of water can cause you to feel bouts of tiredness as the body works harder to function.

Constipation

Water is essential to ensuring our digestive system works efficiently. Water ensures good digestion, ensuring we have regular bowel movements, and it keeps our stools soft and easy to pass. If you're having a little trouble in the bathroom, try drinking some more water to get things moving along. Excuse the pun!

Skin health

Is your skin looking a little sullen and flaky? Fine lines and wrinkles suddenly appearing, or your skin losing its plumpness? There is every chance you skin is telling you to drink more water. Water isn't going to miraculously reverse your wrinkles or the effects of ageing, but it will help to reduce and improve the damage. If anything, you might get some of your natural glow back.

Decreased urination

This is one of the most important signs and an indicator we rely heavily on ourselves. Have you noticed you aren't going to the toilet as often? It is possible you aren't drinking enough water. It is also important to keep an eye on the colour of your urine. Is it a dark yellow or golden in colour? This is a sure fire way to determine that you need to drink more water. Your urine may also have a strong odour and be cloudy in appearance. Keep in mind that taking vitamins and the like can affect the colour of your urine, so please keep this in mind when you get your colour wheel out. Who knew we could learn so much by taking a quick peek in the toilet bowl!

Hunger

Are you feeling hungry, but if you're honest, you know you've eaten enough? You could simply be thirsty. The body sends the same signals, so that feeling of hunger can actually be a symptom of dehydration. So before you open the cupboard or fridge door, ask yourself if maybe you are actually thirsty. The same goes for sugar cravings, we crave sugar when we are thirsty.

Mood

Feeling a little flat, or even a little grumpy? Studies have shown that reduced water levels in our bodies can impair both mood and concentration. Other studies show that even mild hydration can impair brain function. So if you’re having a bit of a tough day, look back at your water intake, and if you haven’t had enough, go fill up a glass. It should help to boost your mood and pick you up.

At the end of the day, no one can tell you exactly how much water you should be drinking. Some people need far more water than others, but I think we can all agree that drinking water regularly and routinely is a must!

The bottom line is, trust your thirst. We get thirsty for a reason, it is our body’s way of speaking to us to say we need to drink more water. We recommend sipping on water throughout the day to keep dehydration at bay. And we often find that starting with a glass of water first thing in the morning sets us up for a day of drinking enough water.
