Drinking Water is Essential for Good Health

20 September 2019

Water is essential for our bodies, and we should be consuming a minimum of 2-3 litres per day. Drinking water is so incredibly important and there are so many reasons why our bodies need water. Here are some of what we believe to be the most important reasons:

  1. It delivers oxygen throughout the body
Blood is more than 90% water, and blood carries oxygen to different parts of the body.
  2. It forms saliva and mucous
Saliva helps us to digest our food and keeps our mouth, nose and eyes moist. Drinking water also keeps our mouth clean, and by choosing water instead of sugary drinks, it can also help to prevent tooth decay.
  3. It lubricates the joints
Long term dehydration can reduce the shock absorbing ability of our joints. Cartilage found in our joints and the discs of the spine contain about 80% water.
  4. It boosts skin health and beauty
When the skin is dehydrated, it can become more sensitive to skin disorders, acne and wrinkles.
  5. It regulates body temperature
Water is stored in the middle layers of the skin comes to the surface of the skin as sweat. As the water evaporates, it helps to the cool the body when it heats up.
  6. It cushions the brain, spinal cord and other tissues’
Prolonged dehydration can lead to problems with thinking and reasoning and can lead to bouts of confusion. Dehydration can affect the brain structure and function. Adequate water intake is also connected to the production of hormones.
  7. The digestive system depends on it
The bowel needs water to function properly. Dehydration can lead to digestive problems, constipation and an overly acidic stomach resulting in heartburn.
  8. It flushes body waste
Water is needed to ensure the processes of sweating and the removal or urine and faeces.
  9. The airways need it
When the body is dehydrated, our airways are restricted by the body in order to minimise water loss. This can often make allergies and asthma worse.
  10. It helps maintain blood pressure
Not having enough water in your body can cause blood to become thicker, which in turn can increase blood pressure.
  11. Distributes minerals and nutrients
Minerals and nutrients dissolve in water, which makes it possible for them to reach different parts of the body.
  12. It boosts exercise performance
Dehydration can reduce performance during exercise, making a person feel lethargic and sluggish. Drinking enough water can assist in preventing cramping, muscle soreness and potential tearing.
  13. Weight loss
Water may help with weight loss, especially if it is consumed instead of juices, sugary drinks and alcohol.
  14. It prevents kidney damage
The kidneys regulate fluid in the body. Insufficient water can lead to kidney stones and other problems.

The bottom line? Drinking water is essential. Drink more water!

Everyone needs to ensure they drink enough water during the day. You may need to even increase your water intake depending on your level of physical activity, the climate you live in, if you are breastfeeding or if you have been unwell.

When we don’t drink enough water, our bodies become dehydrated. Did you know that by the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated? That is why it is important to sip on water throughout the day. When our bodies are dehydrated, we are more prone to headaches, muscle cramps, bloating, sugar cravings, anger, confusion, lethargy. It is also possible to confuse thirst with hunger when we are dehydrated. So, the next time you feel those hunger pangs, ask yourself if you are really hungry, or perhaps you just need to drink more water?

One habit we have adopted at Waterchoice is to have a big drink water as soon as we hop out of bed in the morning. This helps to rehydrate our bodies after a long night sleep and sets us up for the rest of the day.

And while it is nice to drink something different every now and again, remember that water should be our main choice of beverage every day.
